Former The One Show host and Countryfile star Matt Baker gushed over his wife Nicola in a sweet update about her secret talent, away from the spotlight
Countryfile presenter Matt Baker has opened up about the renewed sense of admiration he has for his wife and co-star, Nicola Baker.
Initially crossing paths at a disco show in Cleethorpes, where Matt used to perform, he reminisced about their first encounter during an appearance on the Lorraine show.
“I ended up in this disco inferno and I was backflipping on stage, I used to dress up in wigs,” he recalled.
“One of the clubs that we went to was around the northeast in Cleethorpes and Nicola used to go to the nights.”
Elaborating further, he revealed: “That is how we met. She never knew it was me. I spotted her there, it was love at first sight for me.”
More than two decades have passed since the couple tied the knot in 2004. The duo, along with their two children, also co-present their own programme on Channel 4, Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales.
Alongside their collaborative television work, Matt said that his wife also has a secret talent. Speaking on Gabby Logan’s Mid Point podcast, he said: “She sort of followed physio, went through medical, did that kind of stuff.
“She was really into it and she progressed well, but she never stopped writing. I mean we have got novels coming out of our ears at home that she’s written.”
Nicola, who had always considered writing as a hobby, has reached new heights in her literary journey as she recently secured a publishing contract for a quartet of children’s books.
Speaking about a change he has seen in his wife since she made the career move, Matt said: “She’s flying now and it’s done her so [much] good, do you know what I mean?”
When Gabby replied asking whether he sees a “different woman” in Nicola, he confirmed: “I do, it’s brilliant. I’m so excited for her and I’m so proud of her.”
Nicola appears to have released three of four books so far as part of her book series, A Whistledown Farm Adventure.
Matt shared: “She’s written about what people have latched onto in Our Farm in The Dales. It’s (about) a young girl called Ava whose parents go abroad, they’re part of medicine and they go off to sell some stuff in America and she ends up living on her aunty and uncle’s farm and it literally is a voyage of discovery.
“She is literally for the first time experiencing these things and realising that she’s got a real gift for it and a real love for it.”
Meanwhile, the presenter eagerly anticipates his return to television this weekend with a new episode of the beloved Countryfile, which sees him join forces with Margherita Taylor in Herefordshire.
Countryfile returns tonight on BBC One at 5.30 pm.
