The film did receive a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards
A biopic film now on Netflix which viewers say contains the ‘biggest Oscar snub’ will ‘destroy you emotionally’ this weekend.
The film industry is currently in the midst of summer blockbuster season, with movies designed to be watched with a giant tub of popcorn currently playing in cinemas.
There’s plenty for viewers to choose from at this moment in time, including the Superman reboot, a new Jurarric World flick and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four.
Showing no signs of slowing down, Friday (August 8) marked the release of both Jamie Lee Curtis sequel Freakier Friday and acclaimed horror movie Weapons.
Despite the content currently playing, Oscar fans are already trying to predict what will walk away with all the golden statues next year.
The current favourite to win Best Picture over half a year before the annual event takes place is Nomadland director Chloe Zhao’s upcoming adaption of Hamnet.
Anora swept the ceremony last year, with the Mikey Madison film about a stripper marrying a Russian billionaire winning Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director.
While viewers adored Madison’s performance as the titular character, many were fuming that a Hollywood legend wasn’t in the running.
Released in UK cinemas in January, Maria is biographical psychological drama follows opera singer Maria Callas in the seven days before her 1977 death in Paris.
Director Pablo Larrain is no stranger to historical biopics, having previously worked on Jackie and Princess Diana film Spencer.
Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the film quickly gained a large legion of fans through Angelina Jolie’s captivating lead performance.
Quickly becoming the favourite to win Best Actress, viewers were stunned when Jolie was nowhere to be seen on nominations day.
In spite of receiving a Golden Globe nomination, Madison, Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo, Emilia Perez’s Karla Sofía Gascón, The Substance’s Demi Moore and I’m Still Here’s Fernanda Torres were all ranked ahead of Jolie.
Over on X, previously known as Twitter, fans of the film are still regularly expressing their frustration over Jolie’s snub.
@Xxanumati said: “Angelina Jolie not getting nominated for Maria will be one of the worst Oscar snubs in history actually.” @paolohermos added: “Angelina Jolie’s performance destroyed me emotionally here in Maria.”
@jolie7529 wrote: “Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas will always be iconic in my eyes.. This may have not been the outcome we hoped for but we are proud of you Angie and Maria would be too!” @shubhayanbose posted: “One of the worst Oscar snubs ever: Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in ‘Maria’.”
@effoff1988 commented: “Angelina Jolie is the epitome of a classic movie star as in she is not just an excellent actress but also one who possesses the kind of rare, magnetic screen presence that very few had in the history of cinema.”
Maria is now available to stream on Netflix
