- Who will lead the 118 in season 9? The finale offers hints, but no definitive answer.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 18, “Seismic Shifts.”
The 118 of 9-1-1 has been edging towards collapse since the death of Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) three episodes ago. It’s fitting, then, that the finale begins with an explosion that sends a high-rise (and its residents) into free fall.
As we saw in the closing moments of last week’s episode, Athena (Angela Bassett) finds herself outside an apartment complex when a massive explosion rips through it. Moments before, she broke up a fight between Graham (Sam Roach), the supermarket shopping cart monitor from episode 8, and Donnie (Adam Hagenbuch), who claimed Graham stole his girlfriend’s underwear.
The beginning of the finale reveals that the explosion originated in the laundry room, where Graham was trying to declare his innocence to Donnie and Crystal (Destiny Hernandez). And it’s strong enough to rattle the building’s foundation, collapsing floors and throwing concrete and rebar in every direction.
What follows is a harrowing rescue mission bringing together every member of 118. As they work to navigate the rubble and rescue the trapped residents, they’re forced to reckon with the lingering traumas of Bobby’s passing, as well as their team’s uncertain future.
So, where does the 118 stand at season 8’s end? Did we find out who the new captain will be? And can Athena and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) ever repair their relationship? Read on as we unpack the 9-1-1 season 8 finale.
Who survived the Newton collapse?
Disney/Christopher Willard
Somehow, everybody did.
Captain Gerrard (Brian Thompson) informs the team that there were zero fatalities among the more than 300 residents of the Newton complex. “That’s the hand of God, and your hands,” he insists.
This is surprising given the severity of the collapse, though there were several close calls. Buck (Oliver Stark) and Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) find themselves trapped with an elderly resident after a shift in the building destroys their exit path. Eddie (Ryan Guzman), who shows up to help despite having quit the team, saves the day with a zip line that can carry them to safety.
In the laundry room, Athena finds Donnie and Graham trapped under rubble. Donnie is bleeding out due to a torn artery, and Graham helps keep him alive by applying pressure to the wound. Chim works with Athena to keep Donnnie alive with an IV, but they’re imperiled when, like Buck and Ravi, their exit is blocked by falling debris.
Hen (Aisha Hinds), Buck, Ravi, and Eddie clear a path for them by drilling through the concrete. After ferrying an ailing Donnie to safety, they free Graham only to find that he’s been impaled by a piece of rebar and is bleeding internally.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Athena asks. He says that he knew he was dying, but that Donnie had a chance to survive. He may be obnoxious, but he has a generous spirit.
His sacrifice reminds both Athena and Chim of Bobby’s death (more on that shortly), and Chim, whom Bobby died to save, is determined to help Graham live. It’s not looking good at first, but the team is able to bring the cart cop (and alleged underwear thief) back from the brink of death.
How does the finale address Bobby’s death?
ABC
Bobby’s death, which found the 118 captain sacrificing himself to save Chim, has haunted the last three episodes in different ways. It’s killed the convivial spirit of the 118, led Buck to consider a transfer, and stirred an existential crisis in Chim, who’s suffering from a healthy dose of survivor’s guilt.
“They all have fallout, but Chimney in particular,” showrunner Tim Minear previously told Entertainment Weekly. “Chimney was the guy who way back in season 1, Bobby shared his origin story with: ‘I’m going to check out once I’ve saved this amount of people and fill up this book.’ Chimney was the guy who kind of pushed him toward maybe continuing to live, not just suffer. And now here’s Chimney alive because Bobby isn’t. So that’s going to have a particular ramification for him.”

But it’s obviously Bobby’s widow, Athena, who’s hurting the most. Though she knows it’s not Chim’s fault, she admitted last week that she can’t ever see her reconciling with him. “Whenever I look at him, I see the man who isn’t here,” she said.
They’re forced to work together again during the Newton collapse, and Graham’s sacrifice triggers something in both of them. For Athena, it demonstrates the immense amount of bravery and love it took for Bobby to do what he did. And for Chim, it instilled a desire in him to fight that much harder for those he loves.
In the aftermath, Athena thanks him. Chim says it was a team effort, to which she replies, “You know, that used to make him crazy — Bobby. He always said you never gave yourself enough credit. But he knew you were a smart, talented, capable paramedic. And a great leader. He’d be so proud of you.”
It’s the affirmation Chim needed, not to mention an olive branch to repair their relationship.
While she’ll never “move on” from Bobby’s death, Athena takes a few steps out of the dark shadow of his passing. That includes selling the house they were rebuilding together and meeting a new Bobby when Chim and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) introduce their newly-born son: Bobby Nash Han.
Does the 118 get a new captain?
Disney/Christopher Willard
Following Bobby’s death, the 118 saw their dickish ex-captain, Gerrard, temporarily step back into the role. This was a bummer for everyone. Gerrard, after all, seems more interested in his gig as a consultant on the 9-1-1-esque TV show Hotshots than running the team.
Though he’s on his way out and a new captain will need to be chosen, season 8 ends without a definitive answer as to who it will be.
At the beginning of the episode, we learn that Hen was offered the job but turned it down. “I don’t need that right now,” she says.
Hen, though, appears to spiritually anoint Chim as the new captain after he gives a motivational speech at the end of the episode. Though he initially intends to convince Eddie to rejoin the team, his words become a rallying cry to reinvigorate the 118.
“This is our firehouse. This is the 118. And it’s not just a number, it’s us. And you’re right, Buck, things are never gonna be the same again because Cap is gone. But leaving won’t change that. It won’t make you feel any less sad, it just means that you’ll be sad all alone. Bobby died so that I could live, and it has screwed me up in ways that I can not fully express. But the truth is, he would have done that for any one of us. You see, he knew just coming in to work every day, there is a chance that one or more of us would not make it home. And his job above everything else was to make sure that we did. And we are all standing here right now because of him. This team, we are his legacy. So we can miss him, and we can mourn him, and we can even curse his name, but we are not going to disrespect him by throwing away what he built right here. So you hang up your turnouts, you hit the showers, you go home, and you get some rest, because we are all going to see each other on our next shift right here. Together, understood?”
“Copy that, Cap,” Hen says in response. “I mean, Chim.”
But don’t throw your chips all in on Chim yet. Speaking with EW, Minear clarified that the 118’s “leadership vacuum” will be explored in great detail next season. “It’s not only an impossible vacuum for the one 118 to fill, it’s an impossible vacuum for the show to fill,” he said. “So it’s like we’re both going to be struggling with the same questions and the same challenges on screen and off.”
Does Eddie move back to Los Angeles?
Disney/Christopher Willard
Yes, after much speculation, Eddie moves back to Los Angeles to continue working with the 118. (Fans would’ve rebelled if he didn’t.)
The fan-favorite character had been living in Texas to be closer to his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh), but he was swayed to stay by Chim’s speech and the thrill of being on the frontlines again. And it looks like Christopher will be joining him.
This, of course, means Buck, who took over his lease, will need to find a new place.
How does 9-1-1 season 8 end?
Disney/Ray Mickshaw
The 9-1-1 season 8 finale ends with a montage giving us a sense of where all the characters are heading into season 9. Fittingly, it’s set to “Tragedy Is Not the End” by Joel Ansett, who sings that “This is not the end of the story.”
Athena, having put her house on the market, is looking towards the future. “It’s an amazing property and I think there’s going to be a bidding war,” says her realtor. She offers a melancholy smile when a young, married couple seems enamored with the home.
Buck, too, is looking for a new place, while Eddie is happy to see his son thriving with friends in Los Angeles.
Hen and Karen (Tracie Thoms) see their foster license reinstated after it was revoked by a corrupt councilwoman earlier in the season, thus reuniting their foster family.
In the final scene, the whole gang gathers in Maddie’s hospital room to see her and Chim’s new baby. Surrounded by her friends, Athena tears up as she holds the infant. “Hi, Bobby,” she says.
