Former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has made a stunning admission that he’d jump at the chance to return to the club he calls home.
Giakoumakis joined Celtic during Ange Postecoglou’s early days in charge, arriving in the midst of a squad rebuild and post-pandemic uncertainty. Despite being the Eredivisie’s top scorer before his move, his initial Celtic spell was marred by injuries and limited minutes with Kyogo preferred through the middle.
But the Greek forward’s defining moment came in February 2022. With Celtic trailing bottom side Dundee and title pressure mounting, he netted a perfect hat trick – left foot, right foot, and header – to drag the Hoops to a vital 3-2 win. It was a turning point that pushed Celtic three points clear of Rangers in the title race.
Now 30 and playing with Mexican giants Cruz Azul, the Greek international says he’s never stopped thinking about a possible second spell at Parkhead.
He told Record Sport: “You want to set the fire? I would love to play for Celtic again. I don’t know if that’s a utopia or if it could happen again – but who wouldn’t?
“Even if you don’t know what it feels like to be there, when you’ve already been there, you know exactly what it means.
“So if someone played for Celtic and he was successful and you ask him a couple of years after, ‘Would you play again for Celtic?’ and he tells you no, he’s a stupid guy. He’s so dumb.
“So, yeah, I would love, love, love to wear this jersey again. I don’t know if this circle is done for me, but, yeah, that’s my truth.”
Giakoumakis signed off his Celtic career with a late goal against Kilmarnock in the League Cup, a fitting farewell for a striker who left his mark. Incredibly, he ended the league campaign as Celtic’s top scorer despite starting just 11 of 38 games.
He moved to Atlanta United in February 2023 for a reported £4.3m package, before switching to Mexico.
